What is dental whitening, and what are its causes?
Dental whitening is a cosmetic treatment aimed at restoring the natural shade of teeth or even achieving a whiter tone than the original. It is performed using two whitening agents: hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. It is essential that the brand used has research backing and product testing to prevent damage to the teeth.
Teeth can become discolored due to extrinsic causes, such as smoking, certain foods (coffee, tea, red wine, sodas, among others), and poor oral hygiene, or intrinsic causes, such as genetics, certain medications, and aging.
Cleaning and Aftercare for Dental Whitening
Before undergoing dental whitening, it is recommended to have a dental cleaning to remove tartar and stains.
After the treatment, it is important to avoid pigmented foods and maintain good oral hygiene to preserve the new shade for a longer time.
It is recommended to avoid:
- Acidic, very cold, or very hot foods.
- Berry or strawberry juices, black beans, iced tea, carrots, beets.
- Coffee or tea.
- Red wine.
- Foods with soy sauce.
- Foods or beverages containing dyes: tomato sauces, chicken broth, annatto, among others.
In addition, touch-ups can be done every 6 months to a year.
Types of Professional Dental Whitening
It is recommended to visit a professional to determine the best dental whitening option for each case. There are two types: in-office dental whitening and at-home dental whitening.
In-office dental whitening uses an LED lamp to achieve a change in tooth shade in about an hour. On the other hand, at-home dental whitening is done using custom-made dental trays and whitening gel. The trays are worn for 30 minutes a day or overnight for 12 to 14 days.
The treatment we offer at CosDent combines both techniques, with one complementing the other, ensuring a clear improvement in the color of the teeth. Additionally, with the custom-made trays, patients can easily maintain their whitening, leading to greater effectiveness in the procedure.
Endodontics is the treatment of the root canals that are located inside the teeth. This procedure allows us to remove the damaged or infected nerve and subsequently seal the space with synthetic material to prevent future infections. Endodontic treatments are performed to cure a tooth whose nerve has suffered irreversible damage due to factors such as trauma, deep cavities, or severe infection.
In most cases, endodontic treatments do not cause discomfort to the patient but provide a solution to the irreversible injury of the tooth, eliminating any pain or discomfort that may be present.
At CosDent, we have a specialist in Endodontics, Dr. Willie Jaikel, who obtained his specialization at the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and joined the Costa Rica College of Dentists in 2009. He currently serves as an instructor in the Clinical Area of the Postgraduate program in Endodontics at the Universidad Latina. Together with Dr. Sauma and the CosDent team, we are dedicated to providing you with the attention and service you need and deserve.
If you require endodontic treatment, you can trust our experience and professionalism to achieve the best results.
